Default driveline noise

Hi all,
My wife's 97 impreza (stick) makes a rubbing noise on acceleration. Kind of a swish- swish noise that correlates with road speed.
The stub axles coming out of the transfer case seem awfully loose, (I can grab them and move them over 1/8" up and down.) Could this cause that type of noise?
Also, what about those rear outrigger bushings, a likely culprit?

COming from the front or the back of the car? Passenger or driver side?

I had a similar sound when my driver side caliper was stuck nearly shut on the brake rotor. Caused the sound and also hampered acceleration. You could also tell because the car slowed quicker than normal when letting off the gas.
